Structures On The Island

Cape Moreton Lighthouse is Queensland's oldest operational lighthouse.

The lighthouse was erected by tradesmen, assisted by 35 trusted civil prisoners.

Its construction is of sandstone blocks quarried on the Island.

The Cape Moreton light was first lit on 14 Feb 1857. It is Queensland's first lighthouse.

 Tangalooma Wrecks

Tangalooma Wrecks
The site of Tangalooma Resort was originally used by a whaling station between 1953 and 1962.

The whale chasers Kos I and Kos II are now part of the Curtin reef. The mother ship is one of the Tangalooma Wrecks.

Ancient Shell Middens at Spitfire Creek are a reminder of the Aboriginal people, the Ngugi tribe, who inhabited Moreton many years before European settlement. Some of the Shell Middens are dated more than 1490 years.

Old Military Emplacements
The remains of the old military emplacements and fortifications can still be seen at Cowan Cowan and Rous Battery, reminders of the defence effort during World War II. Cowan Cowan was established as a military camp in 1938, housing as many as 900 soldiers during the war.
